The HP 8480 power sensors are designed for use with the HP 435B, 436A, 437B, 438A, 70100A, and E1416A power meters. These thermocouple and diode power sensors provide extraordinary accuracy, stability, and SWR over a wide range of frequencies (100 kHz to 110 GHz) and power levels (–70 to +44 dBm). A calibration table with VSWR values is applied on the sensor. All sensors of this family are calibrated with a 0 dBm 50 MHz signal, provided by the meter.

The most common sensor is probably the HP8481A, 10 MHz - 18 GHz, -30 - +20 dBm. Normally provided with an N-male connector, also seen with APC7. The HP8485A is similar with a frequency range of 50 MHz - 26.5 GHz, 50 MHz - 33 GHz optional. APC3.5 connector.

The HP8481D, formerly known as HP8484A in a big black case, is the low power version of the HP8481A. Power range: -70 - -20dBm. This sensor is diode based, max power is +20 dBm. For calibration at the meter a dedicated 30 dB attenuator is required, the HP11708A. There is also the HP8485D, the low power version of the HP8485A.

The MMwave sensors are normally provided with a waveguide input, as well as an N connector for calibration. A typical example is the Q8486A from 33 - 50 GHz, provided with a waveguide flange UG-383/U. Its power range is from -30 to + 20 dBm. An exception is the HP8487A running from 50 MHz to 50 GHz, with a 2.4 mm connector.
